And let's not forget that<strong>Ajaccio<\/strong> is also the birthplace of <strong>Napoleon<\/strong>, <strong>Tino Rossi<\/strong>Aliz\u00e9e, and many others, who have made this region famous for its blend of modernity and tradition against a backdrop of Dolce Vita...<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right;\" title=\"Ajaccio beach\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/plage-ajaccio.jpg\" alt=\"Ajaccio Beach\" width=\"315\" height=\"198\">The Gulf of<strong>Ajaccio<\/strong> is the largest in France, and one of the largest bays in the world, with an opening of 18 km and a length of 22 km, 902 km2 and 50 km of coastline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ajaccio is best known for being the first French town to be liberated by the Patriots. <strong>Corsican <\/strong>and with the help of Italian soldiers on 9 September 1943.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"section1\">Flying to Ajaccio on holiday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ajaccio is served by an international airport, which is home to CCM Airlines. <strong>Corsica<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  data-skyscanner-widget=\"FlightSearchWidget\"\n  data-locale=\"en-GB\"\n  data-market=\"GB\"\n  data-currency=\"GBP\"\n  data-media-partner-id=\"2894609\"\n  data-hide-powered-by=\"true\"\n  data-destination-name=\"ajaccio\"\n  data-origin-geo-lookup=\"true\"\n  data-responsive=\"true\"\n  data-flight-button-text=\"Search\"\n><\/div>\n<script src=\"https:\/\/widgets.skyscanner.net\/widget-server\/js\/loader.js\" async><\/script>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It links <strong>Ajaccio <\/strong>to a number of cities in mainland France (notably Paris, Marseille and Nice), and in Europe as a tourist destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"section2\">Holidaying in Ajaccio by boat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: left;\" title=\"Small port in Ajaccio\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/port-ajaccio.jpg\" alt=\"The port of Ajaccio\" width=\"315\" height=\"198\">Le <strong>port of Ajaccio<\/strong> is linked to mainland France almost daily (Marseille, Toulon, Nice). There are also occasional links to mainland Italy (Livorno) and Sardinia, as well as a seasonal service to Calvi and Propriano. The two main shipping companies operating these routes are SNCM and Corsica Ferries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"section3\">Getting to Ajaccio by train<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ajaccio station, owned by Chemins de fer de Corse, is close to the harbour and offers train connections to Corte, Bastia (3 h 25 min) and Calvi (by connection).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two optional stops:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Arr\u00eat des Salines, to the north of the town, in the district of the same name<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the Campo dell'Oro stop, close to the airport<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"section4\">Must-sees in Ajaccio<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Sanguinaires Islands<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/sanguinaire-ajaccio.jpg\" alt=\"The sanguinary in Ajaccio\" title=\"The Sanguinaire Islands in Ajaccio\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(the most important of which is \"Mezzu Mare\") are world-famous, and should be seen at sunset for their thousand and one bloodthirsty colours!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Marine Cemetery<\/strong> (the \"Canicciu\"): founded in 1836, it has 45,000 graves, including a very famous one: that of <strong>Tino Rossi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Greek Chapel <\/strong>This chapel, which until 1960 symbolised the boundary with Ajaccio, was the place of worship of the Greek colony that landed in Ajaccio in 1731. <strong>Ajaccio<\/strong>She came from the Peloponnese and founded the village of Carg\u00e8se.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Le Casone<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right;\" title=\"Napoleon statue in Ajaccio\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/napoleon-ajaccio.jpg\" alt=\"Napoleon monument in Ajaccio\" width=\"315\" height=\"198\">It's a sort of memorial to <strong>Napoleon <\/strong>since 1932, with the same statue found at Les Invalides. The various achievements and exploits of <strong>Napoleon <\/strong>during his reign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also features two eagles symbolising the imperial family and two dates: 1769 and 1821 (birth and death of <strong>Napoleon<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Boulevard Lantivy<\/strong> The name of a wealthy industrialist who played a part in the town's economic development in the 19th century, who left his name to this beautiful seafront promenade lined with palm trees and colourful laurel bushes...<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rue Fesch<\/strong> It bears the name of Cardinal Fesch, uncle of <strong>Napoleon<\/strong>. This street runs through one of the oldest and most authentic parts of the town, which was urbanised from the 16th century onwards and is now home to <strong>the Fesch museum<\/strong>The Louvre is the world's second-largest museum of Italian painting from the 14th to the 18th centuries, with a particular focus on the Italian Primitives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Place De GAULLE<\/strong> (formerly the Place du Diamant, in reference to the jewel-shaped bastion that existed until the 18th century). In this square you will find the statue of <strong>Napoleon<\/strong> in emperor's garb surrounded by his brothers, a bronze statue created in 1858 by Violet le Duc, who apparently committed suicide because he had forgotten the emperor's stirrups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Grandval course<\/strong> In the late 19th century, under the impetus of the English, the city became known as the \"foreigners' quarter\", <strong>Ajaccio <\/strong>became the first seaside resort on the French Riviera. Avenue Grandval was the site of the first large <strong>Ajaccio hotel<\/strong>former <strong>Luxury hotel<\/strong>The clientele was continental and foreign, coming to enjoy the mild climate. In 1981, it became the headquarters of the territorial collectivity of <strong>Corsica<\/strong>You can also admire the prestigious garden that surrounds the building.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/mairie-ajaccio.jpg\" alt=\"Ajaccio Town Hall\" title=\"Ajaccio Town Hall\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Place Foch<\/strong> (formerly the Place des Palmiers), home to the \"Four Lions\" fountain dominated by the statue of <strong>Napoleon<\/strong>the first consul, created by the sculptor Maglioli from<strong>Ajaccio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ajaccio Town Hall<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was built during the reign of Charles X. <strong>ajacciens<\/strong> call it the \"square house\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Corsica Tourist Office<br>3 Boulevard du Roi J\u00e9r\u00f4me<br>Tel: +33 (0) 4 95 51 53 03 Fax: +33 (0) 4 95 51 53 01<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"section5\">Places to visit around Ajaccio<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pass above the Tolla lake<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: left;\" title=\"Lake near Ajaccio\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/lac-ajaccio.jpg\" alt=\"Tolla lake in Corsica\" width=\"315\" height=\"198\"><\/strong> At the EAST exit of<strong>Ajaccio<\/strong> head for BASTELICACCIA, then in the village, the junction for TOLLA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You'll then ride for around 20 kilometres, and at the top of the climb you'll pass a small pass to discover a magnificent view over the whole of the Tolla lake and its small village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The English waterfall<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right;\" title=\"Cascade des Anglais in Ajaccio\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/cascade-anglais-ajaccio.jpg\" alt=\"Discover the Cascade des Anglais for your holidays in Corsica\" width=\"315\" height=\"198\">It is here, at the pass, in the car park and on the left, that you will find the starting point for the English waterfall (English aristocratic tourism was established in this area). <strong>Ajaccio<\/strong>At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, there were donkey excursions to take tourists to see this site.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visits during the holidays are organised with forestry guides. (Contact the ONF for details).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Gulf of Sagone<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: left;\" title=\"The gulf from Sagone to Ajaccio\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/golfe-sagone-ajaccio-1.jpg\" alt=\"Gulf of Sagone\" width=\"315\" height=\"198\">It is made up of three large beaches that correspond to the mouths of three rivers, the second longest in the world. <strong>Corsica<\/strong>the Liamone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The village, which is very old, was invaded by the barbarians, who forced the population to flee to the mountains. The only interesting testimony to this past is the Romanesque church, which is partly in ruins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One beach follows another, and towards Sagone there are two ruins: on the right, a lordly fort, and on the left, a Genoese tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"section6\">Where to stay in Ajaccio for your holidays<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cheap Ajaccio hotel<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ajaccio has an abundance of hotels, with seafront hotels being more expensive than those in the city. The town's patron saint is celebrated.
