Why go to Saint-François beach
Saint-François is the town-centre beach in Ajaccio: a ribbon of fine sand below the citadel, opposite the cathedral. You can walk there from Place Foch in a few minutes, without a car or bus. It is good for a swim between two visits, or on your way back from the market.
The view counts for a lot: the ramparts on one side, the gulf on the other, with the south shore and Porticcio opposite. Above the sand, the palm-lined promenade of Boulevard Lantivy runs the length of the beach. Do not expect much space: it is a small town beach, squeezed between the sea and the boulevard wall.
Type of beach: sand, water and swimming
The Agence du tourisme de la Corse (the Corsican tourist board) describes a small beach of fine sand. It is a little under 300 m from end to end and faces south-south-west, towards the gulf.
In summer, the City of Ajaccio sets up one of its seven lifeguard stations here: swimming is supervised from 1 July to the end of August, every day from 11am to 6pm (2026 season). From June, buoys mark out the swimming area and the zone closed to motorised craft. Outside these dates, nobody is on watch: swim close to the shore, and stay out of the water when the sea is rough.
Offshore, recent averages (2023-2025) from the Open-Meteo Marine dataset give about 24 °C in June, 26 °C in July and August, and 24 °C in September; the sea is still around 22 °C in October and around 19 °C in May.
The parts of the beach
According to the tourist office, the beach is wider at the eastern end, near the citadel and the cathedral. This is where you will find the most room to spread a towel, next to the rocks at the foot of the ramparts.
To the west, the sand narrows below the high wall of the promenade, as the coast heads off towards the Sanguinaires road. You go down to it by steps from the promenade. Further west, about a kilometre away, Trottel beach begins.
The rules of a town beach
The City applies the rules of all its beaches at Saint-François. They are “bin-free”: take your rubbish away or leave it at the collection points in the neighbourhood. Cleaning is done by hand, and the City leaves Posidonia leaves in place when it can: you may find some on the sand. Since 1 July 2025, smoking is banned on the beaches during the bathing season.
The bay in front of the beach is part of the Golfe d’Ajaccio Natura 2000 sites. There are no showers or toilets on the beach: the nearest toilets are in the Diamant car park.
When to go
June and September give you a sea that is already or still warm and a little more room on the sand. In July and August, come in the morning, or between 11am and 6pm if you want lifeguard cover. Out of season, Saint-François is still a pleasant stop on a walk through the old town, with your feet in the water below the citadel.
How to get there
Saint-François is the town-centre beach in Ajaccio, on Boulevard Pascal Rossini, opposite the cathedral. Come on foot: parking nearby is difficult, as the tourist office points out.
On foot
From Place Foch, allow about 6 minutes (450 m, OpenStreetMap walking route): head down towards the cathedral, and the beach lies below the boulevard. From the harbour and the ferry terminal, you can also walk to the beach through the old town.
By bus
Town bus lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 11 (the airport line) terminate at Place De Gaulle, the stop the tourist office recommends; from there the sand is about 4 minutes on foot. Timetables and journey planner: CAPAmove.
By car
From the airport, allow about a quarter of an hour (about 8 km, OSRM calculation, outside summer and without stops). In the centre, on-street parking is paying and spaces are scarce in summer.
Parking
The nearest is the Diamant underground car park, below Place De Gaulle: municipal, paying, open day and night, with toilets for its users. The 2026 charges are published by the City of Ajaccio. Higher up, the Miséricorde car park is linked to the centre by a free shuttle bus.
From the car park to the sand
From the Diamant pedestrian exit, the sand is about 3 minutes on foot (200 m, OpenStreetMap walking route). You go down to the beach by the steps from Boulevard Lantivy.
