Where to stay

Hotels in Ajaccio: where to stay, area by area

Old town on foot, beaches to the west or the far shore: in Ajaccio, the area matters as much as the accommodation.

Best for

Ajaccio stretches for several kilometres along its gulf, and the accommodation follows the same pattern. In the old town, around the harbour, it is mostly hotels, with a few apartments and rooms in private homes. On the hillside, the Quartier des Étrangers is residential: few places to stay, plenty of peace. To the west, the Sanguinaires road runs past the beaches to the Parata headland. Across the gulf, on the other shore, Porticcio mixes hotels, aparthotels and villas, linked to the town by a shuttle boat.

That leaves two ways to stay. In town, you do everything on foot, from the Maison Bonaparte to the market and the boats, at the cost of summer noise and traffic jams. On the coast, the beach is close at hand, but every visit means the car, the bus or the shuttle boat.

The areas run from the centre outwards. For each one, you will find what sets it apart, who it suits, then our places to stay, with their Booking rating and the date it was recorded. The map shows them all, and our tips help you decide. For the beaches themselves, see the beaches of Ajaccio.

The areas

Where to stay, area by area

4 areas, 13 places to stay · Visit Ajaccio

1The old town and the harbour

Within walking distance of the Maison Bonaparte, the market and the boats. Lively and sometimes noisy in summer. Saint-François beach, below the citadel, has its own guide.

The station is near the harbour: you can arrive by train and do everything on foot. If you come by car, leave it in a covered car park, as the centre is often gridlocked in summer.

Best for : on foot · lively in the evening · near the beach

Mostly hotels, all less than 500 m from place Foch. If noise on summer evenings bothers you, the Quartier des Étrangers, just above, is quieter.

2Quartier des Étrangers and cours Grandval

Higher up, among the 19th-century villas, more residential and quiet.

In the late 19th century, the English came here to spend the winter; the former grand hotel now houses the Corsican Assembly. You can walk down the cours to the old town, but the way back is uphill.

Best for : quiet · on foot

We list only one place to stay here, an apartment. For a quiet hotel, look along the Sanguinaires road instead.

3The Sanguinaires road

Along the town’s western coast, with the beaches right below your accommodation. A car or the bus is useful. Further north, Capo di Feno beach has its own guide.

This is the closest area to the Parata headland and the Sanguinaires, best seen at sunset. In season, bus 5 links the road to the centre.

Best for : near the beach · by car

Only hotels in our listings. For a family that would rather rent, Porticcio, across the gulf, has more choice.

4Porticcio, across the gulf

Opposite Ajaccio, beaches and holiday apartments, linked to the town by a passenger ferry all year round. Further south, Isolella beach has its own guide.

The passenger ferry crosses the gulf in about twenty minutes, easier in summer than driving into a centre that is often gridlocked. Boat trips to Scandola and Piana also leave from Porticcio.

Best for : near the beach · with children · by car

The widest range around Ajaccio: villa, apartment, holiday complex and hotels. A car is still useful for moving between beaches; Isolella beach has a cove for young children.

Tips

How to choose

Pick your shore before your hotel

Ajaccio stretches along its gulf, and Porticcio is on the opposite shore. First decide whether you want the town on foot or the beach on your doorstep: the rest follows.

Without a car, stay near the harbour

The station and the port are in the old town, and the airport bus stops at place De Gaulle. From Porticcio, the shuttle boat crosses the gulf; on the Sanguinaires road, bus 5 only runs in season.

Ask where to park

The centre is often congested in summer. Before booking in the old town, ask the accommodation where to leave the car, or plan on a covered car park.

Think about summer noise

The old town and the harbour stay lively until late in season. If you sleep badly with the windows open, look at the Quartier des Étrangers instead.

Avoid mid-August if you can

The Napoleonic festivities in mid-August fill the town. May, June and September are easier, both for sightseeing and for finding a room.

Check the date of the rating

Each Booking rating is shown with the month it was recorded. If it is a little old, take a look at recent reviews on Booking before you book.
