Why go to Sant’Ambroggio

Sant’Ambroggio does not have the scale of the big beaches in the south: it is a strip of fine sand about 300 m long, below the Lumio marina. Its strengths lie elsewhere. The water is turquoise and often calm, there are lifeguards in summer, the beach is equipped for wheelchair users, and you can get there without a car on the Balagne train.

It suits a family day out, or a swim between visits to Calvi and the villages of the Balagne. If you want a wilder beach, walk on to the coves of Spano point, to the west.

Type of beach: sand, water and swimming

The Calvi-Balagne tourist office describes it as a strip of fine sand with turquoise water, often sheltered from the wind. The beach faces north-east; the harbour breakwater closes it off to the north-west, and the coast turns rocky to the south-east.

The water is easy for swimming, and the beach is supervised in summer (tourist office and commune of Lumio). The dates and hours of the lifeguard station are not published online. Offshore, recent averages (2023-2025) from the Open-Meteo Marine dataset give about 23 °C in June, 25 °C in July, 26 °C in August and 24 °C in September.

The rocks on either side of the beach are good for snorkelling. Stay inside the swimming area: boats go in and out of the harbour close by.

The beach, the marina and the nearby coves

To the north-west, the beach meets the marina, the Eugène-Ceccaldi harbour, which holds up to 200 boats and stays open all year. The commune has run it itself since 2021. This is where you will find the cafés, the restaurants and boat hire, for a trip to Scandola or the Agriate.

The centre of the beach is the busiest part: this is where the paths from the holiday residences and the car parks come out.

To the south-east, the sand gives way to a jagged coastline of small rocky points. North of the harbour, two small sandy coves open up between the rocks.

Spano point on foot

About 1.5 km to the west, Spano point (Punta di Spanu) has been a Conservatoire du littoral site since 1982, covering about 65 hectares. The tourist office recommends walking there from the village: coves between the rocks, a Genoese tower and underwater scenery to explore with a mask and snorkel. The Caldanu tower is about an hour’s walk further on. Take water and closed-toe shoes: there is no shade.

When to go

In June and September, the sea is warm and parking is easy. In July and August, come in the morning. Out of season, the beach is still pleasant in fine weather, but the Balagne train runs less often, especially at weekends.

Getting there

How to get there

The seaside village of Sant’Ambroggio is in the commune of Lumio, beside the T30, halfway between Calvi and L’Île-Rousse. The Balagne train stops there.

By car

Allow about a quarter of an hour from Calvi (14.6 km) or from L’Île-Rousse (12 km), OSRM calculation, outside summer and without stops. On the T30, turn into the village of Sant’Ambroggio, cross the railway line and go down towards the harbour: the beach is just beyond it (Calvi-Balagne tourist office).

Parking

There are several car parks in the village, around the harbour and at the entrance to the village. No official page publishes their charges for 2026: check the signs on site.

From the car park to the sand

About 5 minutes on foot from the harbour car parks, a quarter of an hour from the one at the entrance to the village (OpenStreetMap walking routes).

By train

Two stops on the Balagne line (Chemins de fer de la Corse, the Corsican railways) serve the village, Sant’Ambrosgiu and A Marina di Sant’Ambrosgiu, about 15 minutes on foot from the beach. These are request stops: signal to the driver. The journey takes about twenty minutes from Calvi or L’Île-Rousse. Trains are infrequent at weekends out of season: see the operator’s timetables.
