Where to stay

Hotels in Corte: where to stay, area by area

Citadel, centre, station or valleys: in Corte, the right area depends mostly on the car and on hiking.

Best for

Corte is a small town, and so are its places to stay. In the upper town, at the foot of the citadel, and around cours Paoli, they are mostly town-centre hotels, a guest house and apartments. Near the station and the university, the choice is wider: apartments, a holiday complex, B&Bs and a farm inn. Further out, a hotel stands at the mouth of the Restonica, and the villages of Venaco and Vivario, to the south, add chalets, guest houses and hotels.

The choice depends mostly on two questions. Do you have a car? The upper town is made for walking and badly suited to parking; the station and the plain are easy to park in, and the train lets you do without a car. Are you coming to hike? The valleys are easier to reach from the station, the mouth of the Restonica or the mountain villages.

The areas run from the centre outwards. For each one, you will find what sets it apart, who it suits, then our places to stay, with their Booking rating and the date it was recorded. The map shows them all, and our tips help you decide.

The areas

Where to stay, area by area

5 areas, 15 places to stay · Visit Corte

1The upper town and the citadel

Quiet, a few steps from the museum and the squares, with steep lanes and little parking.

Avoid driving up: leave the car in a car park at the foot of the citadel and finish on foot. Along the ramparts, the belvedere gives the best view of the town.

Best for : on foot · quiet

A hotel and a guest house. With heavy luggage, cours Paoli, just below, spares you the climb.

2Cours Paoli and the centre

The most convenient on foot: cafés, shops, restaurants, and the station close by.

With its students, Corte has a liveliness that is rare for an inland town, and it centres on the cours. The citadel and the museum are within walking distance, uphill.

Best for : on foot · lively in the evening

A hotel and an apartment, less than 100 m from the cours: the middle ground between the upper town and the station.

3The station and the plain

Around the station and the university, more recent and easier for parking.

From May to September, the Restonica shuttle leaves from the station, as do the trains to Vizzavona, Ajaccio and Bastia. A car-free stay is possible from this area.

Best for : on foot · by car

No hotel here: apartments, a holiday complex, B&Bs and a farm inn. This is Corte's most varied area.

5Venaco and Vivario

South of Corte, mountain villages served by the train, as close as you can get to the Vizzavona forest.

Venaco is about a quarter of an hour from Corte by car, outside summer and without stopping. The Cascade des Anglais, on the GR20, can be reached by train or by car.

Best for : by car

All our listings are around Venaco: hotels, a B&B, a guest house and a chalet. Vivario, higher up, is closer to the Vizzavona forest.

Tips

How to choose

Leave the car below

The upper town has steep lanes and little parking. If you stay there, leave the car in a car park at the foot of the citadel and ask the accommodation how to get there with your luggage.

Think about the train

Corte is halfway along the Bastia to Ajaccio line of the Chemins de fer de la Corse. A stay without a car is possible if you sleep near the station or cours Paoli. See trains in Corsica.

Hikers, stay near the start

For the Restonica, the station and the mouth of the valley save you a drive in the morning. The road up the upper valley has been closed since the storms of November 2023: check the shuttle timetable before you book.

Be ready for heat or cold

Corte has a more continental climate than the coast, hot in the afternoon in summer and cold on winter nights. Think of air conditioning in August and heating out of season, and check for them on the Booking listing.

Check the date of the rating

Each Booking rating is shown with the month it was recorded. If it is a little old, look at recent reviews on Booking before you book.
