Propriano
In Corse-du-Sud, Propriano lies at the head of the Gulf of Valinco, on the west coast, between Ajaccio and Bonifacio. People have lived on the site for a very long time, but the modern town is recent: it was once the seaside harbour (marine) of the village of Fozzano, only began to grow in the late 19th century and took off in the 20th.

The history of Propriano
The remains of two early Christian churches, one built into the other, and a necropolis have been found here. They are some of the earliest evidence of the spread of Christianity in Corsica. The larger of the two churches suggests there was once a bishopric.
Propriano owes its growth to the road from Ajaccio to Bonifacio, built in 1873. The first building was a warehouse belonging to Fozzano. At the same time, the port became the sea outlet for Sartène, taking over from Tizzano.

Propriano, a base for the Valinco
With its port, beaches and shops, Propriano is the most convenient base in the Valinco: the beaches of Campomoro and Porto-Pollo, the prehistoric sites of Filitosa and the Sartenais, and the road to the far south. It is also one of the few towns on the coast you can reach by ferry without going through Ajaccio. Notre-Dame-de-la-Miséricorde church
On the high ground of the town centre, the church looks down over the port and the gulf. It is recorded in the French heritage inventory.

South of the port, the beaches of Capu Laurosu and Portigliolo form several kilometres of sand below the town.

Things to see around Propriano
The prehistoric sites and the best beaches of the Valinco are less than an hour’s drive away.
Campomoro and its tower
On the south side of the gulf, half an hour’s drive away (outside summer and without stops), the hamlet of Campomoro has a large 16th-century Genoese tower, wider than it is tall. It is a listed historic monument and belongs to the Conservatoire du littoral (the French coastal protection agency). A coastal path heads south from here.
Filitosa
In the Taravo valley, in the commune of Sollacaro, the prehistoric site of Filitosa and its statue-menhirs are a listed historic monument. It is open from April to early November, and admission costs €9 according to the Agence du tourisme de la Corse (the Corsican tourist board).
The Roccapina lion
Further south, on the road to Bonifacio, a granite rock shaped like a lion looks down over a cove and a Genoese tower. See our page on the Roccapina lion.

Boat trips leave from the port of Propriano. The longest, to Scandola, takes a full day.

Practical information: getting to and staying in Propriano
By air
Ajaccio airport is 67 km away, about an hour by road; Figari airport is about 55 km away (OSRM calculation). See flying to Corsica.
By sea
Propriano has its own ferry port, with overnight sailings to Marseille by Corsica Linea (about 13 hours) and services from Toulon by Corsica Ferries. See the ferry crossing.
Without a car
Propriano has no railway station. Via Corsica coaches C1, C3 and C4 link it with Ajaccio, Sartène, Porto-Vecchio and the Alta Rocca. See getting around Corsica.
Parking
The centre is small: in summer, park at the edge of town or near the beaches and walk the rest of the way.
When to go
June and September, for the sea and the footpaths without the crowds. In July and August the town is lively and the beaches are busy. See when to go to Corsica.
