Hotels on Cap Corse: where to stay, area by area

Four areas, in the order of the drive, from the harbour at Erbalunga to the hilltop villages of the west coast, with the places to stay we have chosen.

Cap Corse is often visited as a day trip from Bastia. Staying the night gives you time to walk the customs officers’ path, swim at Barcaggio or have dinner on the harbour at Centuri at sunset. There is no large town here, only harbour hamlets and villages. Our listings are mostly apartments, holiday homes, B&Bs, guest houses and aparthotels, located by their distance from a harbour or a village; our hotels are in Erbalunga and Macinaggio.

We have divided the Cap into four areas, in the order of the drive. Erbalunga and the east coast stay close to Bastia. Macinaggio, the harbour at the eastern tip, is a base for walkers. Centuri opens the west coast with its fishing harbour. Lastly, from Pino to Nonza, hilltop villages stand above the sea, on the road to Saint-Florent. Everywhere, a car makes your stay easier: a single road goes round the cape, narrow and winding.

Under each area come our pointers, a ‘Best for’ line and the places to stay we have chosen, with their Booking rating and the date it was recorded. On the map, each pin carries the number of its area. For the drive itself, its stops and driving times, see our Cap Corse page.

1Erbalunga and the east coast

Seaside villages a quarter of an hour from Bastia: the most practical base for doing the drive in a day and having dinner in town.

Erbalunga is about a quarter of an hour from place Saint-Nicolas in Bastia, outside summer and without stopping. The beaches on the east coast are mostly pebble beaches. In the evening, you can enjoy the little harbour and its café terraces.

Best for : by car · near the beach

Mostly apartments, in the village or less than a kilometre from the harbour, plus one hotel a few steps from the water.

2Macinaggio

The marina at the eastern tip, where the customs officers’ path and the shuttle boat to Barcaggio set off.

Bastia is about three quarters of an hour away, and the Barcaggio car park half an hour, outside summer and without stopping. This is the area for walkers: the path starts at the end of the harbour, and the shuttle brings you back to Macinaggio on the days it runs.

Best for : by car

This is where our listings have the most hotels on the Cap, along with B&Bs and a holiday home.

3Centuri

A fishing harbour at the end of the west coast, facing the islet of Capense, with hamlets perched above it.

Allow about an hour to Bastia and less than half an hour to Barcaggio, outside summer and without stopping. The harbour faces west, so dinner comes with the sunset. The customs officers’ path ends here, coming from Macinaggio.

Best for : by car

No conventional hotel: apartments, a holiday home, a holiday complex and a guest house. Far from Bastia, the area suits several nights better than a single stop.

4The west coast, from Pino to Nonza

Quieter villages clinging to the hillside above the sea, on the road down to Saint-Florent.

From Canari, Saint-Florent is about three quarters of an hour away; from Nonza, less than half an hour, outside summer and without stopping. In summer, parking is very difficult in the village of Nonza: ask your accommodation where to leave the car. For Patrimonio, see the Nebbiu villages.

Best for : quiet · by car

Only two places, a B&B in Nonza and an apartment a few kilometres away. For more choice on this side, see our hotels in Saint-Florent.

Tips

How to choose

One night or several

For a single night, choose the area of the stop where you want to have dinner. To walk the customs officers’ path or make the most of Barcaggio, allow at least two nights in Macinaggio or Centuri.

Follow the direction of the drive

The road goes round the Cap from Bastia to Saint-Florent, by the east coast, the tip, then the west coast. Choose your area by where you will be in the evening, not from the map alone.

Where to park

Village lanes are not made for cars. In Erbalunga, park at the entrance to the village; in Nonza, before or after it. Ask your accommodation whether it has a space.

Pebbles or sand

The east coast has mostly pebble beaches, Nonza a black pebble beach. For sand, you have to go all the way to Barcaggio, at the tip.

Bastia or Saint-Florent as a fallback

If nothing on the Cap suits you, stay at the start or the end of the drive: see our places to stay in Bastia and our places to stay in Saint-Florent.

A dated rating

Each Booking rating carries the date we recorded it. Open the listing to check the exact location, car access and conditions before you book.
